3 Cleaning Techniques to Preserve Your Stainless Steel Appliances

baking soda

Stainless steel is one of the most commonly used materials on kitchen appliances, along with many other types of tools. This is because they are resistant to many things such as heat, corrosion, and rusting—all the properties of a reliable and durable piece of equipment or appliance.

Durable as it may be, stainless steel is invincible to all the problems the world has to offer it. Over time, appliances made of this material will still need some care to stay in good shape, and if you own such appliances, you may be wondering what can be done. Easy! All you need to do is know how to clean and preserve stainless steel!

If you’re looking for better ways to take care of your stainless steel products, the first thing to remember is that not all techniques work on all different types of stainless steel surfaces. As such, it is always important to run spot tests first to see if your technique works!

That said, in this article, we’re going to share with you some cleaning techniques to preserve your stainless steel appliances and more:

The club soda technique

Club soda has been used quite often as a DIY technique to clean many things such as toilet fixtures and more. It also works quite well with stainless steel surfaces, restoring the surface’s look and feel. To use this technique, simply fill up a spray bottle with some club soda. After that, spray it onto the surface and wipe it down gently with a clean microfiber cloth following the metal’s grain.

The baking soda technique

Although fingerprints and the likes can easily be cleaned with the previous technique, some other issues like grease and food smudges can be a lot tougher to clean. Unfortunately, these issues are also the ones that can seriously hurt the steel’s aesthetics, not to mention its durability. To improve the look of the surface, we recommend creating a paste that is a mix of warm water and baking soda. Gently rub the mixture onto the problem area and rub carefully following the grain. Once that is done, wipe the paste and surface clean with a wet cloth, followed by a dry one.

The mild dish detergent technique

For normal cleaning routines, this method is one of the best, mostly because it is effective against mild greasing problems and still simple to do. Most, if not all, homes will have a detergent for washing dishes. All you need is warm water and a mild dish detergent, along with a microfiber cloth. Simply apply some of the liquid onto the cloth and wipe down the surface of the stainless steel. Follow this with a dry towel to dry the surface thoroughly, and you are done!

Conclusion

The above techniques have been employed by many individuals to keep their stainless steel appliances and equipment in the best condition possible, keeping the surface aesthetically pleasing and functional at all times. On that note, we want to once again remind you that not all techniques will work on all metal surfaces. Some techniques may be able to safely clean a surface, while other techniques may actually harm it. As such, always do a little research and spot test a cleaning technique before fully cleaning an appliance. This way, if a problem occurs, you’ve limited it to a small area rather than hurting the entire stainless steel appliance.
