Our Story

AllSouth Appliance has been serving the Southeast and beyond since 1997. Founded by Tyler Hillman with his brother; Josh with the core principle of “doing what you say you’ll do” and the guiding purpose to earn lifelong customers by providing the best selection, insight and value.

The Idea

The appliance industry wasn’t entirely unfamiliar territory for Tyler. Several of his friends had worked for Handy TV and Appliance. As with friends, there was after-work discussion regarding the “day in the life” and wins and losses, but entering the industry was not on the radar. That all changed when Tyler accepted a sales position for a company that sold appliances primarily through home builders. With this new step into sales, owning an appliance business was not even a fleeting thought. But after a couple of years he began to realize there was an opportunity. Through listening to his customers and recognizing some areas of need, Tyler was inspired… and the idea for something more began to grow.

The Start

After some deliberation, Tyler left his sales position for a fresh start. He persuaded Josh and Dane Ratliff, a friend also with appliance experience to join him at what would become AllSouth Appliance Group, Inc. The three of them, along with Tyler’s pound puppy, Bart began running operations from the basement of his Alabaster home. It was long hours of contacting appliance brands, builders and searching for that first showroom. Soon a location was found on a corner in Fairfield with interstate exposure. The ability to offer a true “brick and mortar” location gave AllSouth just what it needed to be viewed as a serious opportunity by appliance brands. The addition of small warehouse in Hueytown provided storage as sales grew and added an additional sales outlet. In the early days they sold the appliances, ordered them into the warehouse, loaded them on a truck and the three (Bart didn’t drive), would then make the deliveries.

Soon more staff was added to assist the growing business; two of which were Ronnie Kornegay and Harrell Richardson, who would both work over 20 years with AllSouth before retiring.

Growing Pains

As the business began to get traction, Tyler sold his home to help finance the growth. He moved in with Josh, allowing them to conserve funds and focus on the business. Open little more than a year and while planning a move into the Pelham area, things got tough. The warehouse that stored the inventory and most of Tyler’s personal belongings suffered a fire. The fire was followed by days of severe rain and local tornado damage. It was a total loss, except the bones of the building.

The Comeback

But with obstacles often come opportunities. The staff buckled down and came together, the business didn’t close. They overcame and the new showroom in Pelham opened, more builder business was won and they added brands to the portfolio. Business continued to grow and soon afforded a larger showroom on Amphitheater Road in Pelham. The company continued to assemble some of the most knowledgeable sales staff in the industry.

They kept growing, it was determined they needed a larger space with a more centralized warehouse as they were still shipping from the Hueytown warehouse. The Homewood area seemed offer the best of access for the Birmingham area consumers as well as distribution. AllSouth relocated and built out a showroom off West Oxmoor Road, where they were soon awarded with the first Subzero-Wolf “Living Kitchen” concept in the South East. Residing there for over 13 years the company expanded into Huntsville and Montgomery, began a service company, added additional brands and attracted even more top sales professionals. During this time they also expanded the warehouse into a neighboring building and began a kitchen and bath division to serve the Birmingham area.

With the change in the economy and ever evolving consumer shopping habits, AllSouth began to look for a more retail friendly showroom for the Birmingham market. A search began and after three years and a long negotiation, the current Birmingham showroom was found and purchased.

Today

Our 30,000 sq. ft. Birmingham showroom is also home to the Southeast’s first and largest Sub-Zero Wolf Living Kitchen. The Living Kitchen is the ultimate in interactive luxury, in which carefully curated vignettes house over 100 state-of-the-art Sub-Zero Wolf products.
